I had always done a Lattice Crust for Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, but a few years ago I decided to have more fun with pie crust.
For my father-in-law’s 80th birthday I made three Blueberry Pies and wrote on them in pie crust: “John” on the first pie; “is” on the second; and “80” on the third.
For the pies for the circus kids I used cookie cutters to make stars of various shapes. The Political Unity Pie provided a great opportunity to send a message with pie crust.
I’ve also made the Lonely Planet logo, beautiful spiral patterns, cut out lobsters, hearts, and more. It’s fun and easy.
Just take the leftover scraps from making your bottom pie crust (or the extra dough you’ve made) roll them out, cut with cookie cutters or a knife, and arrange in pretty patterns on top of the fruit mixture.
I find it makes the pies both attractive and fun to look at, and it really highlights the fruit. You too can be a Pie Crust Artist!
